The Alchemy of Light: A DJ, a Dandypunk and 3D Projection mapping

Often, when I witness something that's inconceivable, there is no other explanation for it up in my grey matter other than what I'm experiencing can only be real magic.

Only it's the kind of magic that's transparent, straightforward, and it has a right before your eyes, tangible reality to it.

I had the very privilege of catching such wizardry recently at the 2012 ISAM 2.0 Tour by
Amon Tobin.

Mr. Tobin is an unexampled Brazilian musician who is a master skipper in the art of composing and producing electronic music.

He is considered to be one of the most influential electronic music artists on the face of this green earth.

Here, his craft of mix and mashing digital sounds becomes elevated to a beyond the imagination level, when combined with this highly advanced, multi-dimensional, shape-shifting art installation, which on its own is a remarkable feat of design engineering.

From a glance, it appears to be a fancy bit of Q*bert hopping technology with its three dimensional, cube design.

However, this highly progressive structure serves as the framework housing Mr. Tobin's musical performance, while serving as a fantastical canvas for the advanced art of heady engineers as they project three dimensional moving video onto the stationary structure.

Promising an unforgettable, "You've never laid eyes on ANYTHING like this before", sort of beyond 3-d experience of unimaginable visual aesthetics.

I felt as though I was having an experience that was light years ahead of my time and am honored to know that I have been around on this little blue dot long enough to have witnessed this.

It was a vivid, experiment of eyecandied visuals of sheer disbelief, and I don't know if I'll ever be able to quite wrap my head around this spectacular technology.

But none of these images can give you the slightest sense of visual imagery experienced at such a performance, so I give you this:

Which again, will do nothing to give you a real taste of what the actual experience is like.

Here's a wee snippet through the eyes of my camcorder. Again, not even remotely close to what it was like to witness through my very own peepers.

Here is some equally impressive work, using the same projection mapping technology. Watch as this guys room transforms into the movie he is watching.

The architectural features for the Kharkov State Building in the Ukraine, were used as the backdrop for this here projection.

And I must give special mention to a man who has a special place in my heart, Mr. Joel Sebastian, an ingenious, and brilliantly imaginative creature otherwise known as
a Dandypunk.

DANDY - (ˈdændɪ) noun, plural -dies. Used widely in late 20th century England. Refers to persons who consider themselves to be arbiters of culture, refinement and wit.

PUNK - (pngk) noun, plural -s. An attitude of rebellion against tradition, with a strong D.I.Y mentality.

" A dandypunk exists to inspire and motivate creativity, non-conformity, whimsy, intense curiosity, do-it-yourself mentality and everyday eccentricity in everybody. The new weird."

He's a real shiny, unparalled artist now employed by the likes of Cirque de Soleil.

Unquestionably, I adore his work and would like to highlight this piece where he executes a delightful exhibition of live performance with precise projection mapping technology.

How very wonderful it is to know that the endless varieties of art continue to advance, and how very lovely it is to be in a place where we can experience the hearteningly, beautiful magic of it all.

To the artists, and to the next generation of cultural innovators,

Thank you.
