November Rain

Early morning, coastal fog, and grey skies above, the onset of an early San Diego winter. This uncharacteristic weather tends to sneak upon us like a feline cat in the gloss of night despite our typically warmer climate.

It's enough to swing the pendulum into cheerlessness.

I am quite fond of gloomy days however, and all that accompanies them. The steaming cups of delightful tea, the afternoons filled with sad piano songs that writhe with passion, the drizzle of rain dancing atop the lapping waves before they break onto the shore.

I welcome the rain as it gives me good excuse to tuck away into a bookstore and nose through the aisles to catch up on my bookjunkie-based freeloading. This of course, always concludes with me slapping down the plastic and depleting a significant amount of funds from my bank account.

For the record, I am not to be trusted in a bookstore with a credit card.

I've a fine umbrella which permits me to spend much time outside to enjoy the little nuances of the rare Southern Californian rainy day, the splish-splash of cars slowly proceeding through puddles (this is California after all, and we haven't the slightest as to how to behave while driving in the rain), and the clickety-clack of high-heeled women taking to the sidewalks that seethe with aromas of wet asphalt.

I do enjoy the warm feeling that musters deep within me on these brooding sort of grey days. I also happen to keep a lovely poem up my sleeve for such occasions. There's really nothing like the encouragement one receives from reading a nice poem, and November is a perfect time of year for reading poetry. This one happens to be wonderfully dreary.

The Rainy Day
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary; It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall
And the day is dark and dreary

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart, and cease repining,
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining,
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall
Some days must be dark and dreary.

Perhaps somewhere there is a creature robed in a black, sashy sort of gown taking command of the skies. I do hope he or she has a moment or two for a whisk into a pile of blankets to rest and catch up on some poetry.

Happy gray day

Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice

Well, we're well into October, and the golden spell has been cast upon us. With it comes the exit of bees, the season of the witch, the goodness of pumpkin flavored everything, the turning and falling of chestnuts, oaks, and maples as they spread a carpet of scattered leaves for us to happily crunch beneath our feet.

As the days and temperatures start to wane and cool off, we prepare for the cooler months ahead, the comforting sweater weather. A celebration of the coming of the cold north wind and the change of seasons.

For your fall cup of tea:

acorns
apple orchards
pumpkin patches
butternut squash
hats
scarves
gloves
spice and everything nice
the turning of leaves
maple breads
hot apple ciders

Not for your fall cup of tea:

letting go of summer
noticeably shorter days
seasonal allergies
 snow blowers
southbound geese

Looking forward to dancing beneath the harvest moon as it heralds in the blustery season.
I do hope you'll join me.

For Thomas

I much enjoy taking to my own mode of transportation, or what I like to call 'The Ankle Express', it's the footwandering kind of travel that has led me to fascinating feats and finds.

During my travels afoot, I've bumbled into a lovely and oh so wandery spot nestled between the bay and the Pacific Ocean in the quaint city of Point Loma.

High above the crashing waves below, sits a site that's rich with history and untold tales, a place screaming to be happened upon.

It also happens to be the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, the final resting place for thousands of
soldiers, many nameless. A quiet place of buried memoirs.

It's a vast gravesite with 101,079 graves, and these days its grounds are closed. There is no longer space available for new casketed remains, so only traces of memories lay frozen in time within this serene, peaceful environment.

It's a really, rather lovely place for someone fascinated with antiquity and bygone times. A place for someone like me to find solace when little else makes sense in the hustly-bustly, nowaday world.

There's just something about cemeteries that leaves you feeling so alive.

I've made a sort of friend along the way in this calming place, and although we've never met face to face, nor never will, I share and cherish my strong connection with Thomas.

You see, my friend Thomas here is no ordinary boy.
He only lived to see a slight window of time. Just barely one day on earth, a lifespan cut far too short.

I wonder what Thomas saw, heard, and felt on that day.

I wonder what thoughts raced through his tiny head, and can only hope that someone held him for the duration of his brief visit here.

I've tried to discover more details about baby Thomas, but despite the vast sphere of the webular world, I know little of him other than what is etched into the face of his tombstone.

I stop by every now and then to pay him proper visits, no less. Usually, I find a cozy spot adjacent to his grave marker in the grassy area beneath the sun. This resty plot of land is so very lovely as it overlooks the sea from above. Here, I read aloud to him.

I read him tales of grand adventures, epic sword fights, shiny treasures, pirate ships of perfectly creaking wood, talking woodland creatures, journeys to the center of the earth, enchanted hunters, little men and women, and other snippets from the childhood greats.

It's just my way of giving him some sort of childhood, and a good excuse to get lost up in my headspace.

Besides, I doubt that anyone's ever read to him.

...but therein hangs the unknown tale of the young boy who lived to see only one day.

Farewell sweet Thomas, as I tuck you away with the sun now setting sleepily behind you.
I'll be back for more storytime.

Be well, my beautiful friend.

Sandwich Architecture

It is said there's a spread between two slices of bread,
it's a well-mastered practice that's taken widespread.

In lieu of plain toppings, stacked with kindness instead,
with fillings of gladness and fresh green go aheads,
and a melty-good smile, you'll surely drop dead.

Stuffed with spells of magic to make one heels over head,
a saucy-bit messy, if it's tidy lunching you dread.
You may even catch a sliver of spirited red.

I built you a sandwich in fond reminisces,
topped with leaflets of love, and covered in kisses.

With seasons of savory, and just a touch sweetened,
but most above all, it longs to be eaten.

A Beautifully Blustery Morning

I learned long ago that living in close quarters to the briny-deep sea was integral to my sense of well being. There is just something about that magnetic juncture where the coastal waters meet the shore that's nearly undefinable.

I can however, say with certainty that there is something beyond marvelous that occurs when the unpredictable currents come in contact with the presence of soft and stable sand.

I always believed that if I had to be anything other than myself, I'd like to be this very crux, the enchanted place where the waters meet the shore.

Here in the southern California parts of the world, I am but a stone's throw to the waters edge. There are days when the crashing waves awaken me from the night's rest, and I rise to to enjoy the silence of a sleepy morning.

And on this given day, for no other reason than it's wonderfully dreary out and the skies are perfectly windy, I head for a stroll to be left alone with my thoughts, my coffee, and a fancy tune up in the headspace.

Taking to my neighborhood is always a guarantee for unexpected run-ins which might not otherwise occur if one opted to stay in bed for a good part of the morning.

It's a sunup sort of morning filled with kind pleasantries from the few transients struggling to keep warm amidst the offshore breeze.

A morning where perfect strangers bid you kind compliments, reminding you that you look quite fierce, as though you could slay vampires, and doing so was possible merely by wearing a certain pair of timeworn boots.

It's the sort of day where you can find a near-perfect dragonfly kite, anxiously awaiting to be cast up into the highest of heights for a proper flight.

Mr. Kite is now safely fastened to a beach palm tree, and I do believe he is still smiling up there.

It's going to be a beautifully, blustery day.

Monday happies to you.

Dragon Tales

...and now for your lighthearted amusement,
I invite you to have a rest.

Feel a smitch of the wanderlust,
and let's play pretend.

Escape to the place in your head where things are far more interesting.

Where the great ancient animals and flying beasts reside.

That floaty spot somewhere between fantasy and reality

in the sheltered company of a friend who knows your innermost secrets through the dustiest corners of your addled soul.

A sanctuary where the summer dangles beneath a lattice-white, clouded sky.

where you can safely take flight upon the wings of change.

and flyaway, faraway North, to a wintery kingdom,

to nestle within the safe harbor of a frostbound obsidian.

and should your dragon give you flame or smoke along the way,

catch him swiftly behind a spirit glass,
like a trapped foxglove fairy.

Tell the creature to speak his secrets, and you'll return him from whence he came.

For dragons are easily-affected creatures,
and perfectly suited for fancy daydreams.

Fairy tales are more than true.
Not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be defeated.
~Neil Gaiman

What is your dragon, and why haven't you conquered it?

If I Were Mayor...

I'd invite everyone to boat trips on the water,
and free balloon rides over the city.

Tumblr_lney065lkv1qaqih6o1_500_large

I would leave quarters in gumball machines for the children to find.

 Tumblr_m069ohkz871qfdwsio1_400_large

I'd line the streets with musicians for spontaneous street dancing,

and I would install cotton candy dispensers on every other street corner.

 Tumblr_m4urpqm8mh1rsm53yo1_500_large

I would appoint a king and queen of wishful thinking,
and I'd serve candled pancakes more often than not.

I'd remind all to take in the the smells of summernight,
and to listen carefully for any late evening soundbugs.

 Tumblr_lnhenxo9bx1qclqbso1_500_large

I'd turn the perimeter of the city into a lollipop forest,
and I'd let the elderly wander free from residential homes.

Wishing you fancy dreams throughout the day.
